John Howe's work depicting J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle earth is instantly recognizable, not only because he worked beside Peter Jackson in bringing The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit to film, but also for the beauty and drama of his art. I love John Howe's work but this book has two serious problems. First, it's riddled with typos and misspellings which I could look past but the second, poor print quality, I can't. What a beautiful book! Presented as a walking tour book, John Howe's stunning pencil drawings and paintings fill every page. You can imagine that Mr Howe was actually there, in Middle Earth, and spent several months sketching everything he saw (I suppose in one way he did do just that!). Through his eyes we see everything, from drawings of a modest Hobbit dwelling to majestic Taniquetil. Some images are familia

This is a must buy for all Tolkien fans, or those who enjoy browsing good fantasy illustrations. In fact don’t just buy one, buy two

Looking at some of those illustrations I just wish I knew how John painted grass so well.

Way too many places in the text was questionable or downright wrong, especially any description relating to cartography or names. I get annoyed that what could been a very good book is tarnished by sheer incompetence in the text. The (small) part that was obviously written by John Howe was nothing wrong with.
